One of our favorite things about Surf Salutations is the people who make up this community. In our Member Spotlight series, we’re sharing a little more about the faces you see around the studio—their stories, their routines, and what keeps them coming back.

This month, meet Taya Hudson!

Taya has been part of the Surf Salutations community since April 2025, and if you’ve taken one of our early morning classes, there’s a good chance you’ve seen her around the studio. Originally from Kyiv, Ukraine, Taya has called Oceanside home for the past four years. And she recently had something pretty exciting to celebrate outside the studio, too—she got married!

We caught up with Taya to hear more about how she found Surf Salutations, why she loves mixing yoga and strength training, and what she would tell anyone nervous about trying a new yoga or fitness studio in Oceanside.

Tell us a little about yourself! How long have you lived in Oceanside, and what do you enjoy doing outside of the studio?

Hi! My name is Taya. I've been living in Oceanside for the past four years after moving here from Kyiv, Ukraine. I absolutely love this town—the beautiful weather, the ocean, and the kind, welcoming people make it feel like home.

Outside of the studio, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, staying active, going to the beach, trying different water sports, and working out. I also love cooking and spending time in my yard. I really enjoy being outdoors and making the most of everything this beautiful area has to offer.

What originally brought you to Surf Salutations?

I work as a massage therapist, and one day I was talking with one of my clients about staying active. I asked her what she likes to do for exercise, and she told me she was a member at Surf Salutations.

I had been thinking about trying yoga for a while. I've been active and played sports most of my life, but I had never really given yoga a chance. My client invited me to join her for a class, and I'm so glad I said yes. I've been a member since April 2025, and I've really enjoyed being part of the Surf Salutations community.

Before joining, what were you looking for in a yoga or fitness studio?

I was looking for group classes where I could improve my flexibility, become stronger, and take better care of my body. I also wanted something that would help me feel more balanced and relaxed.

Of course, I was hoping to find a welcoming community with good energy and a positive vibe—a place where I would enjoy coming back regularly.

Do you remember your first class with us?

Yes! It was the 6:30 p.m. Mellow class, and I believe Melania was the instructor. I remember the calming music, breathwork, and stretching made me feel relaxed and present. I remember going home afterward with a smile on my face.

What are your favorite classes at Surf Salutations?

My favorite classes are Sculpt, Power, Strength, and Fusion, but if I had to choose one, it would be Sculpt.

I love the combination of yoga and weights because it makes me feel stronger and flexible. I enjoy building heat in my body and letting go of stress at the same time. Unfortunately, I can't always make it to Sculpt because of my schedule, but I go whenever I can.

On days when I want to slow down, I really enjoy Power classes. I love moving with my breath—one breath, one movement. It helps me feel calm, centered, and connected to my body.

Overall, yoga helps me stay strong, flexible, balanced, and fit while also relaxing my mind, and that's what keeps me coming back.

Do you gravitate toward yoga, strength, Sculpt, Pilates—or a little bit of everything?

I really enjoy a mix of everything. I like having the opportunity to choose the class that feels right for me on any given day, depending on my mood and what my body needs.

It's nice to do different types of classes and mix things up. I think that variety is good not only for my body but also for my mind. I also enjoy learning new movements and challenging myself in different ways.

How has your fitness routine changed since joining Surf Salutations?

Before I joined Surf Salutations, I used to go to the gym about five times a week, but I wanted to try something different.

Surf Salutations gave me the opportunity to experience different types of workouts and group classes. It also got me into the habit of waking up earlier to attend the 6 a.m. classes because my days usually get busier later on.

The studio has helped me stay motivated, and it has become a regular part of my weekly routine. Now I go to the gym about twice a week and take two to four different classes at Surf Salutations.

What changes have you noticed from practicing consistently?

Since joining the studio, I've noticed a lot of positive physical and emotional changes. My balance and flexibility have improved, and yoga has helped me stay fit. Even though I still go to the gym a couple of times a week, I feel like yoga has improved my overall body shape and posture.

I especially enjoy the morning classes. For me, working out first thing in the morning feels the best. It gives me energy, helps me feel light, and starts my day in a positive way.

Mentally, yoga has made a big difference too. It helps me feel happier, more relaxed, and more present. It reminds me to slow down, take a break from my busy routine, and really enjoy the moment.

Is there a personal win you're especially proud of?

When I first joined Surf Salutations, all of the classes were completely new to me. I had never tried most of them before, and some were really challenging. But as I kept coming consistently, I noticed myself getting stronger and building more endurance, and that made me really proud.

One of the biggest things I've learned is to stop comparing myself to others and instead compare myself to who I was yesterday.

I used to compete in sports, so I always felt like I had to give 100% every single time. But yoga has taught me that it's okay if some days are harder than others. Just showing up is already a win.

Now I'm proud of myself not only because I've become stronger physically, but also because I've grown mentally. I've learned to be kinder to myself, stay consistent, and enjoy the journey instead of chasing perfection.

What do you enjoy most about the Surf Salutations community?

What I enjoy most is how welcoming and supportive everyone is. The instructors are amazing—they're professional, encouraging, and very genuine.

From day one, I felt comfortable and like I belonged. It doesn't just feel like a place to work out—it feels like a community where everyone is kind, positive, and supportive.

What feels different about Surf Salutations?

What feels different to me is how genuine everything is.

From my experience, it feels like Surf Salutations was created to help people, not just to sell memberships. There was never any pressure to sign up or buy anything. Everything was very transparent, and I always felt free to choose what worked best for me.

The instructors are kind, welcoming, and authentic. They don't try too hard—they're just themselves, and that makes the whole experience feel natural.

Over time, the studio simply became a part of my fitness routine.

What would you say to someone who feels nervous about walking into a new yoga or fitness studio?

I would say don't be afraid to take that first step. I know it can feel intimidating to walk into a new studio because I felt the same way at first. But sometimes the best things happen when we step outside our comfort zone. That's how we grow and become a better version of ourselves.

Starting a fitness journey is about so much more than exercise. It brings more energy, happiness, and confidence. You also meet amazing people and become part of a supportive community. I've found that when I take better care of myself, I have more to give to the people I love, too.

I was new once, and joining Surf Salutations was a great decision for me. It has made me happier, healthier, and more confident.

So if you're thinking about trying it, don't be afraid—just go for it. You might be surprised by how much it can positively change your life.

A Few Fun Extras With Taya

  1. Favorite way to spend time after class:Grabbing a coffee with my husband and taking our dog for a walk on the beach. It's the perfect way to start the day.

  2. Favorite local Oceanside spots:Oceanside Harbor and the Oceanside Pier.

  3. A song that always puts you in a good mood:I can't say I have just one favorite song, but I really enjoy listening to '80s music. It always puts me in a good mood, helps me relax, and makes me want to dance a little.

  4. One Surf Salutations class everyone should try at least once: Power. Everyone has different preferences and different fitness levels, but I think it's a class that almost anyone can enjoy. It challenges you while still making you feel energized and accomplished. I also think it's a great introduction to yoga because it can spark people's interest and encourage them to explore other classes. That's why I think it's a great place to start.
