Looking for the best yoga studio in Oceanside or wondering what it's like to become part of the Surf Salutations community? Every member has a unique story, and this month we're excited to introduce you to Laura Gallo!
What began as a search for a local fitness studio in Oceanside quickly turned into a love for yoga, strength training, Pilates, and a supportive community that keeps her coming back week after week. From trying yoga for the very first time to discovering the mental and physical benefits of a consistent movement practice, Laura's journey is one many people can relate to.
Read on to hear her story.

What originally brought you to Surf Salutations, and what were you looking for in a fitness studio in Oceanside?
The location and variety of classes initially brought me to Surf Salutations, and the introductory offer was such a good deal and a great way to try the different classes.
You initially joined for our strength training and fitness classes. What inspired you to try yoga for the first time, and what was that experience like as a beginner?
I started with the Strength and Sculpt classes because that was the type of fitness class that I was most familiar with. I was introduced to yoga through the Sculpt classes and then took the Yoga 101 classes (learned what a vinyasa was☺) and then started taking the Power classes and was hooked! I had no idea what I had been missing not doing yoga. It is so good for strength and flexibility, but for me most importantly, mentally.

Surf Salutations offers everything from strength training and Pilates to yoga and mobility classes. How has having a variety of class styles in one Oceanside fitness studio impacted your routine and results?
One word, consistency.
I had never been able to stay consistent in another type of fitness class. The variety of classes really helps me stay consistent. If I do a few of the harder physically classes like Power, Strength, or Pilates, or a high-intensity class like Fusion or Sculpt, a Mellow or Yin class next feels perfect. This keeps me coming to the studio multiple times a week which keeps me consistent and never bored.
What physical, mental, or lifestyle benefits have you noticed since you started taking yoga and fitness classes at Surf Salutations?
I have definitely noticed benefits in all three areas. Physically, I have noticed when I can do more in classes than I had been able to previously (hold positions longer/better, using heavier weights). And working out naturally makes me make better nutrition choices.
However, I think the mental effects have been the most beneficial to me. Every workout truly boosts my mood. My family has even noticed this and my kids will sometimes ask now, "When was your last class, Mom?" when I get grouchy, lol.

One thing we hear often is that Surf Salutations feels like more than just a place to work out. Have you made any personal connections or experienced a sense of community here that surprised you?
This is so true, the studio really feels like a community and everyone is so friendly and encouraging. It was really fun to meet people in the Yoga 101 classes and then "grow" together afterward in all the classes the studio offers.
Do you have a favorite class or instructor? What makes that class or teacher stand out to you?
This is like choosing my favorite child, lol. They are all really so great and each instructor and class offers unique approaches and experiences.
What stands out to me the most is how the instructors go above and beyond to connect personally with the students; whether it is chatting before or after classes, modifying a workout if there is a known area needed, demonstrating ways to practice at home, or bringing cupcakes for after class, to name a few. ☺
Many people feel nervous walking into a new yoga or fitness studio, especially if they're new to yoga or are just getting back into exercising. What would you say to someone who's considering trying Surf Salutations?
Don't hesitate!
I think what makes Surf Salutations so unique is that we are all at different levels and everyone is simply working to improve themselves. We love to see new faces in the studio and can't wait to tell them what class to try next.
I started yoga at 51 and only wished I had started earlier. If I can do it, anyone can!☺
